Poll shows people’s faith in city hall at low point

Probe Research on Wednesday released its latest polling on Winnipeggers’ views on the state of the city heading into the Oct. 28 election. Key findings, as sourced from the 600 respondents, are:

People are glum about Winnipeg at the moment. “Two-thirds of Winnipeg residents indicate the quality of life in the city has deteriorated in the past four years.”
People have little faith the next city council can or will do much to fix things. “Fewer than one in 10 see the next set of elected officials making a major difference, with one-third believing they could make a minor difference addressing Winnipeg’s challenges.”
Crime and public safety led the top concern among the respondents. “More than one-quarter identify crime and public safety as the top issue facing Winnipeg, with a similar proportion (27%) pointing to poverty and homelessness as the main challenge.”
Support for re-electing incumbent Mayor Scott Gillingham appears soft but many said they were unsure: “Gillingham has more fans among men, higher-income earners and those in outer suburban areas, while older citizens are more likely to want someone else to take office after the October municipal election.”

Polling was conducted between and May 25 and June 8. The margin of error is 4 per cent. The Winnipeg Free Press was closely designed in designing the survey. AI tools were used in the data analysis, with human oversight of the results.
